A healthcare network operating 8 hospitals and 45 clinics needed to migrate their on-premise hospital management system to the cloud. The system handles patient records, scheduling, billing, and pharmacy management for over 500,000 patients annually. Edvirra managed the complete migration while ensuring HIPAA compliance.
The migration required careful planning due to HIPAA regulations and the critical nature of healthcare data. We conducted a 3-month assessment phase where we mapped all data flows, identified PHI (Protected Health Information), and designed encryption strategies. All data is encrypted at rest using AES-256 and in transit using TLS 1.3.
We chose AWS as the cloud provider and implemented a multi-AZ deployment for high availability. The architecture includes separate databases for different modules (patient records, billing, pharmacy), automated backups with 30-day retention, and disaster recovery procedures tested quarterly.
The migration was done over weekends in phases, starting with non-critical modules like appointment scheduling, then moving to billing, and finally the patient records system. Each module ran in parallel with the old system for 2 weeks before full cutover. We maintained 24/7 support during the migration period.
The system has been running in production since January 2024. Key improvements include:
50% reduction in IT infrastructure costs
4x faster report generation
100% HIPAA compliance maintained
